John Smith originally sailed within yards of what is today the location of the National Aquarium. He and his crew discovered red and white clay deposits along the Patapsco River which inspired the name "Bolus Flu" after a type of English clay that had a similar reddish color. Shortly after exploring the Patapsco River, the crew of the shallop almost mutinied due to harsh conditions and Smith directed the shallop to return to Jamestown.
