The arrival of the John Smith shallop will be the culminating event in Colonial Beach’s “Celebrating Jamestown 400--Come Home to Colonial Beach” festival.  This festival will run from June 8th through the 17th, with the shallop’s arrival at the Town Pier on the 16th.  Admission is free.

Near present-day Colonial Beach, Smith and his crew encountered a Wiccomico man, Mosco, who bore a heavy beard that was unusual for Indian men and more than likely indicated a European ancestry.  Mosco was overjoyed to see, for the first time, others as hairy as himself after years of goodnatured teasing by his smooth-skinned tribesmembers. He quickly established himself as the expedition's guide and facilitator for the trip up the Patawomeck (Potomac) River.
