When the English settlers arrived on the Virginia Peninsula, the area now known as Hampton was the site of an Indian village, Kecoughtan. Documented by Sir Christopher Newport during the first journey up the James River, Kecoughtan, a large and well-populated community under the power of the chief Powhatan, became a regular stop for early travelers on the "Powhatan Flu".
