The origins of Newport News' unusual name may be dated back to the Starving Time of 1610, when the first Jamestown colonists left to return to England in desperation. As they left the colony, they encountered Captain Christopher Newport's ship in the James River off Mulberry Island.  Through Newport, the colonists learned that reinforcements of men and supplies had arrived, and that the colonists need not abandon Jamestown. Thus, the story goes, the City was named for Newport's good news.
