The NOAA Buoy System &
 The John Smith Trail

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), Verizon Wireless and several other partners are currently developing a series of "smart buoys" to guide adventurers along the John Smith Trail.  Part of a broader trail-marking effort by the National Park Service, these state-of-the-art buoys will serve as scientific observation platforms and educational resources.  Accessible through the Internet and cellular phones, the buoys will provide important cultural, geographic and historical information while transmitting real-time scientific data to the World Wide Web.   Three fully functioning prototype buoys have already been deployed to test the technology for this new system.
