The John Smith shallop makes its first official stop of the reenactment voyage on the Eastern Shore of Virginia in Onancock.  The shallop will arrive at the Town Wharf on May 19 at 11am to join in the John Smith/NOAA Weekend festivities.  Come meet the crew, tour the interactive exhibit tent, see the shallop and view The Salisbury Zoo’s traveling exhibit featuring live animals found on Delmarva today.  Help dedicate the new Onancock Landing Park as an official port of entry to the John Smith Chesapeake National Historic Water Trail at noon on Saturday May 19th.Admission is free.

As John Smith's 1608 exploration ventured across the Bay towards what is now the Eastern Shore of Virginia, "an extreame gust of wind, rayne, thunder, and lightening." obliged Smith and his crew to seek refuge from the inclement weather in a sheltered location he named "Keale's Hill". Scholars today surmise that the Keale's Hill of Smith's diaries is the location of present-day Onancock, a town that gets its name from "Owanancock", the Indian word for 'foggy'.
