In
1608, on Smith's second exploratory excursion
along the Bay's tributaries, Smith and his
party reached the waters of the Susquehanna
River near present-day Port Deposit, Maryland.
There they peacefully met with emissaries from
the northern Susquehannock Indians who had
journeyed south from Pennsylvania to see the
Englishmen. Of the Susquehannock Indians,
Smith stated in his journals that, ...sixtie
of those gyant-like people came downe,
with presents of Venison, Tobacco-pipes
three foot in length, Baskets, Targets,
Bowes and Arrowes.
