While sailing up the Nanticoke River, the crew was met by hundreds of Kuskarawaok (Nanticoke) Indians lining the shore. The people, "ran as amazed in troops and (some of the Indians) got into the tops of trees, they were not sparing of their arrows, nor the greatest passion they could express of their anger." Smith was eventually able to trade with the Indians, however, and learned from them of the lack of a viable Northwest Passage in the area as well as stories of a great Indian nation to the north,"the Massawomecks".
