As Smith and his crew passed the current site of Washington, DC and continued up the Potomac, they soon came upon the Little Falls at the boundary of modern Washington. Continuing by foot to Great Falls, they found rocks with "divers tinctures" which they hoped signaled the presence of precious minerals. Smith also encountered men in canoes that were "well loaden with the flesh of bears, deer and other beasts, whereof we had part."
