The John Smith shallop will visit Vienna, Maryland as part of a weekend commemoration of Smith's 1608 exploration of the Nanticoke River.  Come to the Vienna waterfront to tour the interactive exhibit tent, meet the crew, and view the shallop.  Highlights of the festival include: presentations by Dr. Mike Scott and Dr. Virginia Busby, Native American ceremonies and entertainment by the Nause-Waiwash Band of Indians, a display of a large private artifact collection from the Chicone Towne area, Historic Handsell, near Chicone Creek, will be open to visitors, the Salisbury Zoo will be on hand with an animal display, the skipjack Nathan of Dorchester will offer rides on the river, and tours of the Vienna Heritage Museum and select homes will be offered throughout the day.  Also on hand will be costumed interpreters, artisans, musicians, food and more!  Admission is free.

 

 

 

It is known that near this location Smith and his men had a tense encounter with hundreds of Kuskarawaok (Nanticoke) Indians. The "king's village" of Kuskarawaok, noted on Smith's 1612 map, was likely located about one-mile upriver from present-day Vienna.
